Archaeological sites
- Tulum: Unique by its location, the city of dawn where Venus and Earth are like twins is perched on a cliff above eternity and the Caribbean Sea. - Xel-Ha: The water entrance as the Mayans named it deserves its name as it is only 1,5km inland. Its natural basin used to be a safe harbour during storms. - Coba: Follow the stone-paved avenues of this lost city hidden in the tropical jungle, they lead to the highest pyramid of the Yucatan peninsula. - Chichen Itza: Once the most powerful center in the Mayan lands. Where Tukulkan the feathered snake shows its seven triangles of shadows slithering down the pyramid on the equinoxes. - Itzamna: In the town of the Izamal, set on top or next to the four pyramids, is the largest church complex of the Yucatan build by friar Diego de Landa, the Spanish too famous inquisitor. - Kohunlich: Five giant heads and the pyramid of masks recently excavated. The area is of archaeological interest with the sites of Becan and Xpujil nearby. - Uxmal: Palace of Chac the Mayan Rain God who ruled supreme on the Mayan lands and pyramid of the Magician, a sun and light show worth a night stay. And within a few kilometers: Kabah, Sayil, Labna.
Cities of interest - Tulum Pueblo: Still a small calm Mayan town with just enough supplies for souvenirs buyers. - Puerto Adventuras: A marina with its harbour, shops, restaurants and golf course. - Playa del Carmen: Once a fishermen's village that grows so fast that it's hard to keep track of the last happening. - Cancun: A lot can be said, just remember its beach was as virgin as Tulum's 28 years ago! - Valladolid: The Yucatan's first capital kept its colonial flavours. - Izamal: All yellow and white painted thanks to the pope's visit, the mix of Spanish and Mayan edifices provides a rare atmosphere. - Chetumal: The state capital but also the border town with Belize. - Merida: The splendor of Colonial Mexico is still vivid in today's Yucatan capital town. Theatres and shops housed in palatial mansions along the "Paseo Montejo", an avenue fashioned after Paris' Champs Elys„e! Yet quite different but definitely a place to visit. - Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve
Part of mankind Patrimony since 1986. Its Mayan name means "birth of the sky", and it seems no lie. Easy to enter those preserved shallow bays, lagoons, mangroves and wetlands'channels from las Ranitas: Simply follow the beach or drive the track road south to Boca Paila's bridge, half way to Punta Allen a fishermen's village. Los amigos de Sian Ka'an operate boat trips to the inner wilderness of this natural reserve housing thousands of water birds and endangered species.
Cenotes and inland wonders Cenotes were the lifeblood of the Mayan community. Those sinkholes formed by the rain-water are true oasis into the jungle. For certificated divers, the unique possibilities of the Yucatan undergrounds and cenotes are a must. Definitively to remember. Try, nearby Las Ranitas: Dos Ojos, Gran' cenote, Cenote Azul and many more...: To scuba-dive (with the appropriate guide) in those most incredible cave-systems is an experience not to miss. To snorkle in the clear water underground or open skied cenotes of smooth limestone walls. Dzinup: One of the prettiest cenote's pools, to bathe between the stalactites and stalagmites. Balancanche: An incredible underground labyrinth. 2km of paths through the trees of life (stalactites) and roots seeking for fresh water.
Recreation parks Xel-Ha (11 miles North) Xpuha (23 miles North) Xcarett (41 miles North): Each of those paying eco-parks has its attractions based on the natural surroundings of the Mayan lands to safely discover the jungle's life, crawl down canals of fresh water that empty into the Caribbean sea through entrances to underwater caves, snorkel among brilliant coral reefs and swim with dolphins. One can also visit their museums, shops, and restaurants.
Golf courses Puerto Adventuras (26 miles North): 9 holes Playacar (45 miles North):18 holes
