Tulum
This ancient Mayan city on the edge of the Caribbean Sea is built high atop a rock cliff. Its unique setting is unlike any Maya site in the region. From the main temple, the Mayas were able to display torches in the windows facing the sea, guiding trading canoes through the reefs at night. These windows are visible evidence of their intelligence. The magic of the Maya is still alive in Tulum.

Cobá
Northwest of Tulum, the ruins of Cobá lie. Walking through a narrow jungle path leads to several of the Maya structures. Colorful butterflies flutter along the way. Several species of birdlife fly by as spider monkeys dangle from tangled branches. Cobá is believed to have been home to thousands of Mayans during the Classic Period. Stepping over stones where ancient roads called sacbe converged and discovering the many stelae (carved stone slabs) is part of the experience.

Muyil
About 25 km. South of Tulum. Archeological evidence indicates that Chunyaxche (also known as Muyil) was continuosly occupied from the Preclassic period until after the arrival of the Spanish in the sixteenth century. There are more than one-hundred mounds and temples, none of them completely clear of vegetation. The center of the site is connected by a sacbe - a Maya road- to the small Muyil lagoon 500m away. This lagoon in joined to the large Chunyaxche lagoon and ultimately to the sea at Boca Paila by an amazing canalized river: the route used by Maya traders. The

Sian Ka´an Biosphere Reserve
This 5280-square-mile reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico. The name means "the place where the sky born" in the Maya language, and seems utterly appropriate when you experience the sunrise on this stunningly beautiful coast . Approximately one-third of the area is tropical forest, one-third fresh and salt water marshes ans mangroves, and one-third is marine environment, including a section of the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere. The coastal forests and the wetlands are particularly important feeding and wintering areas for North American migratory birds. Sian Ka´an contains examples of the principal ecosystems found in the Yucatan Peninsula and the Caribbean: an astonishing variety of flora and fauna. All five species of Mexican cat --jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarundi-- are present along with spider and howler monkeys, tapir, deer, and the West Indian manatee. More than 300 species of birds have been recorded, including flamingo, roseate spoonbill, white ibis, crested, guan, wood stork, osprey, and fifteen species of heron. The Caribbean beaches provide nesting grounds for four endangered species of marine turtle: the green, laggerhead, hawkbill, and leatherback, while Morelet´s and mangrove crocodiles inhabit the swamps and lagoons.

Cenotes
Cenotes are the fresh water sinkholes that are the perfect place for swimming and especially snorkeling and scuba diving. The largest single collection of cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula is located at the Cavern of Dos Ojos, just a few kilometers North of Tulum on Highway 307. In this superb natural setting, you will find adventure and beauty beyond expectation. Activities are available for every level of ability from swimming and snorkeling to cavern scuba diving.
