Activities Cozumel is long known for beeing one of the best places in the world for those Diving enthusiasts, with the second largest reef in the world and a wide variety of marine life, Cozumel offers visitors a memorable experience in the blue Caribbean Waters. Dive trips can be arranged with several dive shops who basicly offer the same services.
Cozumel is famous for the billfish run in the Yucatan channel. The months of: march, april, may and june offer the best bet for bluewater flyfishing. Sailfish, dorado, spearfish, white marlin and blue marlin are the main targets for the flyfisherman.
Plus some tunas, bonitos, barracudas, kingfish and wahoo around. There are some boats with flyfishing expertise in Cozumel, the Captain and mate(s) will help you tease this fish close to the stern so you can cast your fly at them.
The first flyrod world record ever for spearfish on a fly was caught in Cozumel waters, also the first (and only one so far) bluewater flyrod slam (Sailfish, blue and white marlin) was also caught in the Yucatan channel. A good proof that Cozumel´s bluewater flyfishing can get red hot anytime.
For the sailfish and white marlin a 12Wt and 13 Wt rod is perfect, for dorado a 10 Wt will do the job. But for the blue marlin at least a 13 Wt rod will be suggested.....with good saltwater flyreels with plenty of 30+ pound backing. The blue marlin in Cozumel waters is a perfect target for the flyrod, because their average weight is 150 pounds or less (as recorded in the local big game tournaments). But the blue marlin is the most difficult adversary with the flyrod, and very few people in the world have caught a blue marlin on a fly. The white marlin also offers a magnificent challenge on a flyrod, but less difficult to catch than a mighty blue.
Cozumel island offers great flats fishing; best off all, Cozumel is a place where you can flyfish all day and still have plenty of activities for the family and the nonfisherman, such as: shopping, restaurants, natural parks, ruins, diving, nightlife and much more.
The flats and the saltwater lagoons located in the north of the island: Montecristo, Paso Balem and Rio de la Plata are teeming with bonefish, baby tarpon, permit and snook.
The number one quarry in Cozumel would be the bonefish, fish in the 3 to 4 pound range are usual, with some 10 pounders around. This is sightfishing for tailing bonefish in very shallow water. It would be your choice to fish from the boat as your guide poles you around or you could wade (the entire area is for wading). The area offers also: birdwatching, wild animal life and some archeological sites around.
